Insurance for Burst-Pipe Damage
Here’s the good news most homeowners don’t know: a burst pipe is the textbook “sudden and accidental” loss that homeowners insurance is designed to cover. Water extraction, structural drying, and repairing the damaged drywall, flooring, and finishes are typically covered — so for many homeowners the out-of-pocket cost is just the deductible. (The plumbing repair to the pipe itself may or may not be covered, depending on your policy.)
There’s one condition worth knowing: carriers generally expect the home to have been reasonably heated. A pipe that burst because a home was left unheated in a freeze can be a coverage fight — which is another reason cabin and second-home owners should keep the heat set to a safe minimum, not off. We document the cause and the full scope in Xactimate, photograph everything, and communicate with your adjuster so the claim is filed right and moves quickly. Full cost ranges and carrier-specific detail are on our water damage restoration page.
Burst-pipe damage is covered by homeowners insurance — distinct from surface flooding like snowmelt or monsoon runoff, which needs a separate NFIP flood policy. If you’re not sure which caused your loss, we’ll help you sort it out.
